Custom fields
A custom field is extra information you track about your contacts beyond the built-in ones like name, email, and phone — things like account tier, favorite product, renewal date, or anything else that matters to your business. Once you add a custom field, it shows up on every contact's profile, can be shown as a column in the Contacts list, and can be used to build segments and filters.
Custom fields live alongside your built-in fields in one shared list for your whole account, so a field you add is available everywhere contacts are — profiles, lists, imports, and segment filters.
Steps
Add a custom field
- Go to your contact field settings (under account Settings).
- Click + Add field.
- Give it a label — the friendly name people will see, like "Account tier."
- Check the auto-generated key (a short, code-friendly version of the label used to store the value) and adjust it if you like — you can't change it later.
- Choose a type:
- Short text or long text
- Phone or URL
- Number
- Yes/No
- Date, or date + time
- Dropdown (a fixed list of options you define)
- Pick which section of the profile it should appear in (for example Identity, Company, Address, Lifecycle, or Custom).
- If it's a dropdown, add the options contacts can choose from.
- Turn on Required on new contacts if every new contact must have a value.
- Click Add field. It's now available on every contact profile and in the column picker.
Edit a field's settings
- In the same field settings list, find the field and open its actions menu.
- Click Edit field.
- Update the label, required setting, or section as needed.
- For dropdown fields, add, rename, or remove options here — removing an option doesn't delete it from contacts who already have it, it just stops it from being offered going forward.
- Click Save changes.
Tips
- Field type and key can't be changed once a field is created, since existing contact data depends on them — get those right at creation time, or delete and recreate the field if you need to start over.
- Built-in fields (marked with a lock icon) are always present and can't be deleted, but some of their settings can still be adjusted.
- Deleting a custom field doesn't erase the values already stored on your contacts — it just stops them from displaying until the field is re-created with the same key.
FAQ
Q: Will adding a custom field affect my existing contacts? A: No. Existing contacts simply have an empty value for the new field until you or your team fill it in.
Q: Can I make a dropdown field required? A: Yes — turn on "Required on new contacts" for any field type, including dropdowns.
Q: Can custom fields be used in segments and filters? A: Yes. Any custom field can be used to filter or search the Contacts list and to define who belongs in a segment.
