SMS

An SMS artifact is a short text message ready to send to a segment or list of contacts. Create one for things that call for a quick, direct nudge — an appointment reminder, a time-sensitive alert, a flash sale, or any message better suited to a text than an email.

How to create one

Start a session anywhere in the app and describe the text you want to send. Pulse's "New report" works if you're just getting started. If the message belongs to a specific campaign, open that campaign's chat instead so the assistant has the campaign's context. If you need to define the audience first, describe that group in a segment's chat.

Tell the assistant who the message is for and what it should say. If you don't specify the audience — a single contact, a list, or a saved segment — the assistant will ask before drafting. See Using AI sessions for more tips on writing a good prompt.

Example prompts

A text goes to a single contact, a saved segment, or an explicit list of phone numbers — those are the three audiences the assistant can resolve. @[Name] below stands for an @-mention: type @ in the composer and pick the real contact or segment. See Pointing at your own data.

Quick

  • "send sms to @[Contact name] saying 'Hi {{ contact.first_name }} — your session starts in an hour.'"
  • "send sms to @[Segment name] saying 'Doors open at 9am tomorrow. Reply STOP to opt out.'"

Scheduling, and draft-only

  • "Send an SMS with the message 'Last chance — registration closes tonight' to @[Segment name], scheduled to go out in 2 hours."
  • "Draft an SMS to @[Segment name] reminding them about tomorrow's appointment. Just show me the draft — don't schedule or send it."

To specific numbers

  • "Create an SMS draft with the body 'Reminder' addressed to exactly these three numbers: +15550000101, +15550000102, +15550000103. Don't schedule and don't send — leave it as a draft."

What happens after you ask

The assistant drafts the message and shows it to you along with the recipient count before anything is sent. Nothing goes out at this point — review the wording, ask for changes, or approve it as-is.

Once you approve, the assistant will ask when you'd like it sent: right away or at a specific date and time. Sending immediately still takes a short moment to actually go out, since messages are queued and dispatched through the app's sending system rather than fired off instantly. You can also ask the assistant to cancel a message that hasn't gone out yet.

If your account's text-sending quota has been used up, the assistant will let you know and point you to your administrator rather than attempting to send.

In the preview panel

Open the SMS artifact to see its preview panel. A text message is short and doesn't have a template, a download, or a publish step, so the toolbar here just gives you a Close button to exit the panel.

The Info tab shows the message text, with its status, audience, length and send time below it.

Audience tells you who the text goes to. If it's addressed to one or more segments, each is listed by name and links through to that segment, followed by the number of contacts it reaches. If instead you picked recipients by hand, those contacts are listed and link through to their contact pages — up to five of them, then a "+N more" count for the rest. A recipient who isn't a saved contact shows as their phone number instead. A draft you haven't chosen an audience for yet reads "No audience selected".

Length shows how many messages the text will go out as and how many characters it's using, for example "2 messages · 140 chars / 160". Emoji and other special characters lower that limit, so a message that uses them can split into more messages sooner than a plain-text message of the same length.

Approved by appears once the text has been sent or scheduled through an AI session: it shows the name of the person who approved the send and when they approved it. Texts sent automatically by an automation don't show this row.

FAQ

Q: Can I send an SMS to a single contact instead of a whole list? A: Yes. Just name the contact, and the assistant will draft the message for them specifically instead of a segment or list.

Q: Can I change the message after I've approved it but before it sends? A: If it hasn't gone out yet, ask the assistant to update it, or cancel it and start over. Once it's sent, it can no longer be edited.

Q: How do I check whether a text actually went out? A: Ask the assistant for the delivery status of that message, or check the Library entry for the SMS artifact.
